“Becoming a Spiritual Guide”
Many of us who serve the church work as program managers, academic teachers, family counselors, motivational speakers, or some mixture of these; meanwhile the spiritual hunger of children, youth, and adults goes largely unaddressed. What is our role as ministers and followers of Jesus when life in North America, both within and outside of the church, is growing increasingly anxious, fractured, busy, and cynical? How do you help the hurried child, the pressured student, and the harassed manager discover the slow life of God? Maybe it begins by serving people as a spiritual guide. Through lecture, discussion and practice we'll explore what it means to address the spiritual needs of people in the 21st century.
Friday, May 9: 9:00 am– 12:30 pm
"Growing Souls: Forming People in the Way of Jesus"
Mother Teresa once said, “You in the West have the spiritually poorest of the poor…it is easy to give a plate of rice to a hungry person, to furnish a bed to a person who has no bed, but to console or to remove the bitterness, anger, and loneliness that comes from being spiritually deprived, that takes a long time.” What can we do to respond to the spiritual needs of children, youth, and adults within our congregations? How do we help people cultivate the life and heart of Jesus? Through teaching, spiritual exercises, and discussion we will explore an intergenerational approach to spiritual formation that seeks to integrate contemplation, creativity, and compassion as experienced in the life of Jesus.
