Rhapsody of Love Benefit Concerts
Sent Into Our Neighborhoods
In 2009, when the Willard Intermediate Public School in Santa Ana had the funding for its music program eliminated, New Hope Presbyterian Church organized the "Rhapsody of Love Benefit Concert" at the Orange County Arts Pavilion.
The concert featured the Elevation Orchestra, created and directed by Ryan Cross, a world-renowned cellist and bassist, as well as television and film score composer. KABC-TV News anchor Leslie Sykes emceed the event and Hollywood actor/singer Keith David made a special appearance.
Over $16,000 was raised.
With the proceeds the church sent professional musicians into the Willard classrooms for mentoring, instrumental lessons and educational workshops.
They also formed a 20-member youth choir from the neighborhood that regularly practices and performs at the church.
The benefit concert has become an annual fall event, now hosted at the St. Andrews Presbyterian Church.
